Happy Halloween! To celebrate the spookfest, our homework is the 1971 influential Italian (but English-speaking) horror film A Bay of Blood by Mario Bava. This movie notoriously was released under more titles than any movie – under Chain Reaction, Twitch of the Death Nerve, even Last House on the Left 2 (no connection to that franchise… at all). In honor of the many-named film, we have a trivia game for Crazy Horror Titles, specifically horror subtitles.

The Beguiled (2017)

Now available to rent on Amazon, Apple, Google Play $4.99
Director: Sofia Coppola
Starring: Nicole Kidman, Colin Farrell, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning

Virginia. Three years into the civil war. A girl wanders the forest, looking for mushrooms, and comes across a wounded Union colonel, John McBurney (Colin Farrell), and takes him back to her school, the Seminary for Young Ladies. The school, run by the steely and pragmatic head-mistress Miss Martha (Nicole Kidman), only has a few students left and one teacher, Edwina (Kirsten Dunst), around. Everyone else has ditched the Seminary to be with their families, or perhaps had existentialist crises about the conflict of teaching/learning sewing / violin / French as the country is torn apart, causing them to wander country roads in search of meaning (my fan-fiction, not really within the movie). The school is a mansion on a small plantation, and has run into disrepair, as the civil war is raging outside the iron gates. At first, the ladies hide the charming Union soldier from the Confederates, who check in on the school. Later, they are confronted by the consequences of this “Christian-minded” action, as McBurney disrupts the equilibrium of this little community. I’m comfortable giving away this plot (for free!) as the film is not that interested in it. Instead, it luxuriates in the humid and tense atmosphere of a school being reclaimed by nature and repressed feelings. And there’s the crux.

State of the Race: The Gotham Independent Film Nominations

As we all know, Oscar season is a year-round affair. The first domino dropped on October 19th, with the first film award nominations coming – these were for the Gotham Independent Film Awards. These are given annually from the Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP) “the largest membership organization in the United States dedicated to independent film” and the awards were founded in 1991.

A group of people decide on the nominations and awards, limiting the scope to films that could be considered independent – so big budget movies and big studio ones are ineligible. So we wouldn’t expect to see Dunkirk or Wonder Woman here. But independent film has dominated the Oscars for the last 20 years anyway – the last four years have been indie winners for Best Picture, for 12 Years a Slave (2013), Birdman (2014), Spotlight (2015) and Moonlight (2016) – all of which were nominated for Best Feature in the Gothams.

Let’s show the actual nominees first and then see what it means:
